Formats & codecs

Ingest anything.
Deliver everywhere.

Norsk accepts the full range of live video signals — hardware SDI and HDMI capture, IP contribution via SRT, RTMP, UDP TS, and SMPTE 2110, NDI, WebRTC, and file-based inputs — and delivers to HLS, DASH, WebRTC, SRT, RTMP, UDP TS, NDI, and file outputs. H.264, HEVC, and MPEG-2 on the video side. AAC, MP3, Dolby Digital, and Opus on audio. Whatever the signal and whatever the destination, Norsk connects them in a single workflow.

Supported formats

Input and output — the complete picture.

Full technical specifications are at docs.norsk.video. What follows covers the protocols, codecs, and formats supported across ingest, delivery, and everything in between.

Ingest
RTMP, SRT, WebRTC, UDP TS, SMPTE 2110, DeckLink, NDI, and file

Live stream ingest: RTMP (H.264/HEVC), SRT (MPEG-2/H.264/HEVC), WebRTC (H.264), UDP Transport Stream (MPEG-2/H.264/HEVC), and SMPTE 2110 for broadcast IP environments. Hardware capture via BlackMagic DeckLink SDI and HDMI, supporting up to 8K at 8 or 10-bit with up to 32 channels of 48KHz audio. NDI for network device interface contribution. File inputs include MP4, Transport Stream, image files (JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP, BMP), and WebVTT caption files. Signal generators produce test cards and audio tones.

Video codecs
H.264, HEVC, and MPEG-2 — encode and decode across all paths

H.264 (AVC) is supported on all input and output protocols. HEVC (H.265) is supported on RTMP (enhanced RTMP), SRT, UDP TS, MP4, and Transport Stream inputs, and on HLS, DASH, SRT, RTMP, UDP TS, and file outputs. MPEG-2 video covers SRT, UDP TS, and Transport Stream file inputs and outputs — handling contribution feeds from broadcast encoders and playout systems that predate H.264. Hardware encode and decode (4:2:0, 8-bit or 10-bit) via NETINT Quadra and NVIDIA NVENC.

Audio codecs
AAC, MP3, Dolby Digital, E-AC3, and Opus

AAC in all four profiles — LC, HE-AAC, HE-AAC v2, and AAC-LD — across HLS, DASH, WebRTC, SRT, RTMP, UDP TS, and file outputs. MP3 supported on SRT, UDP TS, and Transport Stream inputs and outputs. Dolby Digital (AC3) and Dolby Digital Plus (E-AC3) on SRT, UDP TS, WebRTC, and Transport Stream inputs; E-AC3 also available on MP4 file output. Opus on WebRTC, SRT, and UDP TS outputs. BlackMagic DeckLink capture handles up to 32 channels of 48KHz audio.

Delivery
HLS, DASH, WebRTC, SRT, RTMP, UDP TS, NDI, and file outputs

HLS output with H.264/HEVC, AAC, WebVTT subtitles, and DRM (FairPlay, Widevine, PlayReady). DASH with H.264/HEVC and AAC. WebRTC delivering H.264 with AAC or Opus. SRT and UDP TS carrying MPEG-2/H.264/HEVC video, the full audio codec range, CTA-608/708 captions, and SCTE-35/SMPTE-2038 signalling. RTMP output with H.264/HEVC and AAC. NDI for delivery to downstream production tools and monitors. File outputs to MP4 and Transport Stream.

Subtitles & captions
CTA-608/708 passthrough and WebVTT

CTA-608 and CTA-708 caption data passes through on RTMP, SRT, UDP TS, and Transport Stream inputs and outputs without modification. WebVTT captions are supported on HLS output and as a file input — a WebVTT file can be ingested and timed to the live video stream. Closed captioning via live transcription services (AWS Transcribe, Azure, OpenAI Whisper) is also available within the Norsk workflow.

Signalling & metadata
SCTE-35 and SMPTE-2038 — end to end

SCTE-35 ad insertion markers are carried through on RTMP, SRT, UDP TS, and Transport Stream inputs and outputs. SMPTE-2038 ancillary data travels the same paths. Both are preserved end to end through the Norsk workflow — no stripping, no re-injection — and available for downstream ad decisioning systems and monitoring tools.
