Deliver broadcast-compliant multilingual live subtitles across concurrent streams for one of the world's most-watched annual sporting events—without adding latency, without rebuilding the playout stack, and without additional editorial headcount.

About the client

The broadcaster is one of the world's leading sports media companies, producing and distributing live coverage of a premium international sport property to audiences across multiple markets. With tens of millions of viewers tuning in live across broadcast and streaming platforms, delivering accurate, synchronised subtitles is both a regulatory requirement and a viewer experience imperative.

As the series expanded into new markets and accessibility obligations tightened across key territories, the broadcaster needed to scale multilingual subtitle delivery without adding operational complexity to an already high-pressure live production environment.

The challenge

When milliseconds matter: the challenge of live sports subtitling

Live sport coverage at this scale is among the most technically demanding broadcast environments in the world. Commentary moves fast, terminology is highly specialised, and the production infrastructure spans multiple feeds, platforms, and regulatory jurisdictions simultaneously.

The broadcaster's existing captioning workflow had reached its limits. Subtitle latency was exceeding acceptable thresholds for viewer experience and broadcast compliance in key markets. Delivering accurate multilingual subtitles at pace across concurrent streams, without rebuilding the existing playout infrastructure, required a fundamentally different approach.

The broadcaster had evaluated and ruled out generic AI captioning tools. Accuracy on domain-specific commentary, including technical race terminology and the full roster of driver and team names, was simply too poor to meet broadcast standards.

  • Rebuilding the playout stack
  • Additional editorial headcount

"Live sport doesn't wait. We needed subtitles that could keep pace with commentary in the most technically complex broadcast environment we run—reliably, every event, across every market."

CaptionHub's Timbra and Norsk: built for broadcast, tuned for sport

CaptionHub deployed Timbra, its real-time subtitling engine, in partnership with Norsk, the developer platform for rapidly building high-availability live media workflows. CaptionHub had already been building its real-time captioning capabilities on Norsk's infrastructure when the broadcaster opportunity emerged—and Norsk's ability to rapidly extend its platform to enable timing metadata for the project meant the solution could be delivered at a pace that a more traditional integration would never have allowed. Norsk handles SRT ingest from the broadcaster's existing feed, passing it directly into Timbra and allowing the solution to slot into the existing playout workflow without requiring any infrastructure changes.

Timbra's ASR models were fine-tuned on sports commentary, with a custom terminology dictionary covering event-specific vocabulary. The result: high-accuracy transcription at speeds that generic models could not match. Translated subtitles were automatically routed to four language outputs and delivered as WebVTT via the broadcaster's existing CDN and playout infrastructure.

The solution is fully automated. Using the CaptionHub API, the broadcaster's own systems start and stop captioning, manage output, and control the full workflow—with no manual intervention required. Captioning runs as a silent, invisible layer within their existing infrastructure: configured once, triggered automatically, entirely within their control. For a team operating at the pace of live sport, that operational simplicity is as valuable as the technology itself.

The outcomes

From first event to full season: the impact

The partnership between CaptionHub, Norsk, and the broadcaster delivered measurable results from the first event of the season. Subtitle latency was reduced, bringing the broadcaster into compliance with accessibility requirements across all key markets.

Timbra allows the broadcaster to deliver multilingual subtitles with zero extra effort, without additional editorial resources. The Norsk integration meant the solution went live within 3 weeks of contract, slotting into the existing infrastructure without disrupting the production team's workflow.

The broadcaster's operations team reported increased uptime across the full season—across every live event, every market, without interruption. Domain-specific accuracy improved significantly following custom dictionary integration, with fewer corrections required versus the previous workflow. Viewer accessibility ratings improved across key markets, with feedback from regional audiences highlighting the quality and timeliness of subtitles as a notable step change from previous seasons.

"The reliability was what stood out. In live sport there's no such thing as a test run—every event is the real thing. Timbra gave us confidence that the subtitles would be there, in each language, every time. The audience noticed; the response on social has been unlike anything we've seen before."

Accelerating towards a multilingual future in live sport

As broadcast accessibility requirements continue to evolve across global markets, the broadcaster's investment in Timbra positions it to scale multilingual delivery without scaling its operations team. The ongoing Norsk partnership ensures the solution evolves alongside the broadcaster's infrastructure, with additional language markets and platform integrations already in development.

CaptionHub's collaboration with Norsk demonstrates what becomes possible when broadcast infrastructure expertise and AI-powered language technology work in concert. By combining Norsk's media workflow technology with CaptionHub's domain-tuned ASR and real-time subtitle delivery, the two companies have built a model for live sports subtitling that is already being extended to other broadcast and events properties.

What was once an unsolvable problem—accurate, low-latency, multilingual subtitles in a high-stakes live sports environment—is now a reliable, scalable part of the broadcaster's production stack.
